The film, billed as the final chapter in DreamWorks’ hit animated series, kicks off the festival’s 12-day slate with its star-studded world premiere — in Midtown, not Tribeca — at the famed Ziegfeld Theatre.
While it may seem strange to launch a film festival with the fourth chapter of a family-friendly Hollywood franchise, it fits right in with Tribeca’s history of balancing independent film with more commercial cinema.
Past editions of the festival have seen the debut of mainstream fare such as “Spider-Man 3,” “Mission Impossible III” and “Star Wars – Episode II: Attack of the Clones.”
“We have always sought to open our festival with films that are captivating and strike an emotional chord with moviegoers,” explained festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal.
Embracing modern moviemaking and distribution technology — such as movies on demand — seems to be a theme of this year’s festival, and what better way to stay current than by debuting a film in 3D?
“Shrek Forever After” is the first 3D movie in Tribeca’s nine-year history. DreamWorks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg called it an honor to be selected to open the festival.
The movie debuted at a time when the debate over the 3D is at a fever pitch.
