The Frankenstein story is not only the core myth of modern science, it has been a gift to movies. The gift continues with “Splice,” a clever lab thriller from the crafty and intelligent Vincenzo Natali, who wrote and directed “Cube,” “Nothing” and “Cypher.” The tale is largely told at a high-tech lab called Nuclear Exchange Research and Development (NERD), and its freakish cloned product gets named Dren (yep, nerd spelled backwards).
Resident nerd geniuses are scientists Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley), whose marriage is consumed by their work. He wants a kid, she doesn’t. But once Dren is born, by genetic splicing and tools that would have made Dr. Frankenstein swoon in envy, Elsa becomes highly protective of the … what? It has a tail, a darting tongue and legs like a kangaroo, but grows remarkably feminine charms including breasts, big eyes and a little critter voice that is oddly sexy.
